Confused between Surgery and Medicine? Let’s talk!

The answer lies in being well informed about both branches (Surgery & Medicine).

In old days it was thought, to be a physician you need to think a lot while to be a surgeon you do a lot (as physicians would say).

But this is not the scenario now a days.

Firstly, think about your internship days and then think about what your life would be after 10 years.

As a medicine intern, you get to manage around 100 patients in OPD, resuscitate, work for more than 36 hours on the admission day which seems to be very hectic but at the same time, you get to do a lot of procedures like lumbar puncture and pleural/ ascitic tap and assisting in central lines.

Also, you get to decide the plan of treatment, check the reports and go on rounds with seniors to see how the patient is responding to treatment.

After resuscitating and seeing the patient survive is the best feeling ever.

Medicine will always throw challenges your way as you get to know more and more about the subject as you grow. You just have to be very curious!!

Now when you look at surgery, you have to know one thing for sure, that you are always on call!

During my internship days, I got to assist my seniors in the OT for hours, I enjoyed doing all that as I felt I was passionate about the branch. You get to see the results real quick. That satisfaction on the face of the patient was worth standing long hours for surgery.

When you think about surgery residency, you’ll have to run to the ward if a patient develops complications, negotiate with the SICU in charge to get the bed for the patient, call the blood bank to save a couple of packets of required blood, assist your professor in OT, hence you get the drift.

To be a surgeon you must be clear about some things about yourself like the love for operating for hours and hours, the obsession for asepsis and a demand for perfection in every little thing like the size of drapes, the exact way to fold the drapes, uniformity in the appearance of stitches etc etc., the ability to exude calmness when the patient is bleeding out.

It’s impossible to work as a surgeon if you are thinking about your next break! No dear, surgery is a way of life. YOU HAVE TO BE VERY PASSIONATE!! #surgery&medicine
