Introduction

Every year, thousands of Indian Medical students face one big concern of getting admission in a good medical institution. Few students manage to clear the entrance tests for government universities while others keep looking for options in Private & Deemed universities. Most of the students cannot afford the high fees of Deemed universities.

In such circumstances come the foreign medical universities to the rescue of Indian medical students. Many universities in different countries are offering MBBS and other medical programs at an affordable price, which is certainly not the case in India. Nowadays, many countries offer high-quality medical education at very affordable prices.

The students from various countries including India, China, Nepal and Bangladesh, etc are willing to study MBBS in foreign countries. There are around 10,000 Indian students who get admissions to MBBS Abroad every year in different countries.

Why Students going to abroad for studying M.B.B.S.?

Currently, there are 537 Medical colleges in India teaching MBBS course & total seat is 104,333, on which 54168 MBBS seats in a Government colleges & 50,165 in a Private & Deemed colleges. Every year, approximately around 15 to 17 Lakhs candidates appeared for NEET UG Exam & from that nearly around 8 lakhs candidates qualify the NEET exam.

And all these candidates 1st choice is to become an MBBS doctor. As we know that currently we have only 40,000 Government seats & we all are also aware that doing MBBS from Private & Deemed colleges will cost a candidate nearly 50 Lakhs to 1 Crore Indian rupees. Reservation is also one of the main reasons for studying MBBS in abroad.

As almost every state of India has a very less number of seats reserved for open candidates, the reservation percentage almost touches 65% to 75% in every state. Nowadays, students not only look for affordable medical education but also the quality of education provided in medical colleges abroad.

Disadvantages of studying M.B.B.S. in Abroad.

Poor passing rate for FMGE- What is FMGE? Medical Council of India Screening Test, also known as Foreign Medical Graduates Examination (FMGE), is a licensure examination conducted by the National Board of Examinations (NBE) in India. The test is one of the mandatory requirements for an Indian citizen who has a medical degree from a college outside India to practice medicine in the country. While taking admission Many students don’t check the below which resulted in poor FMGE passing rate.

  • Know the grade of the university.
  • The experience of university in teaching MBBS.
  • Whether the university offers MCI Screening coaching or not.

P.S- However, the above point will no more be valid as NEXT exam has now been made mandatory for MBBS Graduates (Indian & Abroad studends both). The test will replace NEET PG and FMGE exam. NExT admission is expected to begin by December 2023.

Long duration course nearly 6-7 years for MBBS degree- After completing 5-6 years of MBBS Course from abroad, candidates need to clear FMGE exam & post passing they will have to mandatory complete one-year rotation internship in India.

No state quota seats advantage for postgraduate courses admission-  All Government Colleges seats available for admission to medical postgraduate courses will be distributed as 50% to all India Quota & remaining 50 % to the State Quota. Those who have passed MBBS examination from foreign University are not eligible for 50% State Quota seats.

Language problems in many countries- There are many countries which do not teach the MBBS course in the English language, they use their own local country language for the same.

Eligibility Criteria to Study M.B.B.S. in Abroad:

Admission criteria reserved for Indian students to seek admission in MBBS in any of the Best Medical Universities of Abroad are mentioned below:

  • Indian Medical aspirant (non- reserved category) must have secured a minimum of 50% in their 12th from Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
  • For reserved categories such as (SC/ST/OBC) medical aspirants can apply with a minimum of 40% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology, according to the guidelines of MCI (Medical Council of India).
  • Medical aspirants have to be NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) qualified.

Important Details about NEXT (National Exit Test).

The Board of Governors-Medical Council of India scrapped FMGE & replaced it with NEXT (National Exit Test). From Dec 2023, the entire Foreign Medical MBBS graduate has to appear for NEXT instead of the FMGE exam, along with Indian MBBS students.

As per the NMC Bill 2019, NEXT or National Exit Test will be a common exit exam conducted to promote meritorious medical students to practice medicine in their respective fields or even pursue Post Graduation. As part of being an exit exam, NEXT will also be the common gateway for both Foreign & Indian medical students to attain a license to practice medicine across India.

Medical Career in U.S. & U.K.

To practice their medical career in the U.S & UK, students have to appear for USMLE- United States Medical Licensing Examination & PLAB- Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board.

USMLE- United States Medical Licensing Examination is a three-step medical examination that allows the medical graduates to practice their medical career in the U.S. All medical aspirants can appear only three times within 12 months for USMLE. The USMLE is under the governance of two medical bodies- the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) and the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME).

PLAB- Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board. - The Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board test, or the PLAB test, helps us to make sure doctors who qualified abroad have the right knowledge and skills to practice medicine in the UK. There are two parts to the PLAB test.

PLAB part 1 PLAB 1 is a written exam made up of 180 multiple choice questions which you must answer within three hours. Each starts with a short scenario followed by a question. You need to choose the right answer out of the five possible answers given. You can sit part 1 in a number of countries, as well as in the UK. PLAB part 2 PLAB 2 is an objective structured clinical exam. It's made up of 18 scenarios, each lasting eight minutes and aims to reflect real-life settings including a mock consultation or an acute ward. Part 2 tests run throughout the year at our clinical assessment center.

What happens after you’ve passed PLAB 1 and PLAB 2? Once you’ve passed both parts, you can apply for registration with a license to practice. Your application must be approved within two years of passing part 2 of the test. Once we approve your application and you gain registration you can work as a doctor in the UK.
