Vijaynagar Institute of Medical Sciences - Bellary is a Government MBBS Medical College was established in 1961 ,the College is affiliated with Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences - Karnataka with total intact of 150 MBBS & 104 Post MBBS MD/MS/ Diploma seats.
Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Sciences Campus is situated in the former Allipur Jail Buildings. The great freedom fighters including Sri. Chakravarthi Rajgopalachary, Sri. V.V. Giri, Sri.
Bejawada Gopala Reddy, Sri. Ghantasala Venkateshwara Rao, Sri. Tekur Subramanya etc.; were blocked in this jail. This jail was closed in 1958 and the entire area of 173 acres (0.70 km2) was handed over by the Government to start the Medical College in Bellary in 1961.
It has developed as a prestigious institution over the last 60 years. Then this Medical College was overcome and made as an autonomous Institution “Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Sciences, Bellary” in 1996, Vijayanagar Institute of Medical College District Hospital is situated in the heart of the city.
To bring all departments under one floor, for the purpose of even better-coordinated teaching and good treatment to the patients even these two departments of Gynecology and Pediatrics department will be transferred to VIMS campus before the end of this year to the newly constructed wards in the VIMS campus.

This college has more Lecture Halls onsite the campus for various departments with a capacity of 200 students in each lecture halls. Good ventilated Examination Hall for college semester with Capacity of 500 students and comfortable, peaceful situation.
There are several practical labs for students with well-equipped facilities and a comfortable situation with good teaching facilities and technician availability to care for the equipment. There are 400 well-educated teaching facilities working in various departments with good experience.

Vijaynagar Institute of Medical Sciences College have Separate Hostel for both boys and girls and has been provided for both male and female students within the college campus.
